Kiosk > 'Unfolds' in het trappenhuis van een parkeergarage

Proposal for a newsstand on one of the busiest pedestrian routes in town: the staircase of a car park in the city center.  

Concept voor een tijdschriftenkiosk in een parkeergarage.
Het trappenhuis van een parkeergarage is een van de drukste verkeersroutes in een stad en vaak niet echt een aantrekkelijke plaats om langer te blijven dan nodig. Deze ingreep zou de goede eigenschappen van deze ruimte op een speciale manier kunnen benutten.

Eerst heb ik onderzoek gedaan naar de levensvatbaarheid en haalbaarheid van een kiosk op deze locatie. Daarna komen alle regels om de hoek kijken en als laatste moeten alle eisen en voorwaarden in een uitvoerbaar ontwerp gepast worden.

Omdat het bij een tijdschriftenkiosk voornamelijk om wanden gaat, kwam ik al gauw op het idee van een 'meubel' dat langs de wanden uitgevouwen wordt, in dit geval over twee verdiepingen. De uitdaging vind ik altijd het zo ver mogelijk vereenvoudigen van een complex geheel: in dit geval een vlak vierkant dat gesneden en gevouwen wordt tot het uiteindelijke 'meubel', de kiosk. Eigenlijk het meubelstuk dat de kale ruimte aankleedt.

Hieronder zie je een beknopt overzicht van het onderzoek en de uitwerking.

Design for Guggenheim Shelter 2009 > 'Growing Home' Shelter

A tectonic organism.



This shelter has a constructional frame of living and growing bamboo. It starts by planting small bamboo cuts in concrete grow boxes, together these boxes make up the foundation from which the frame of the shelter will grow. Japanese bamboo grows extremely fast even in a colder climate. Direction and angle of growth will be regulated by a network of tension cables. By adjusting the growth variables and tension cables the shelter builder is able to controle the shape of the shelter. When the bamboo reaches its desired height the growth will be stopped and the frame will be covered by a weather resistant translucent fabric.
I have tested and researched this system and the basics really work.
Could this be a possible future? A living organism as a constructional element of architecture.

Na een pakket van eisen ontstaat er een basisconcept: in dit geval een verkeersroute rond een rechthoekig 'plein'. Zichtlijnen binnen dit bijzondere en historische pand moeten behouden blijven.

Op zoek naar een innovatieve en duidelijke oplossingen voor het positioneren van de vereiste functies in deze relatief lastige ruimte.

An office studio for three people.

vooraanzicht zonder houten latten-facade.

'flow' van de omkadering zorgt samen met het niveauverschil voor een breking van het volume van het gebouw op dit perceel. Het werkelijke volume is hierdoor minder prominent aanwezig.
